Implementation of ground displacement effects on heritage buildings in university education

The focus of the project is to improve education about the impact of induced seismicity on historic buildings in the V4 countries. The knowledge of experts will be connected with the research and educational activities of the project partners. A presentation of the results will be made and the basis for a database of affected historic buildings will be prepared.

project issues

Urbanization of cities is related to the growth of urban population and the development of urban infrastructure. The original infrastructure is changing due to industrialization and economic growth. The consequence is an increase in the traffic load on the original roads and the creation of new roads. The position of the city objects does not change, but roads are getting closer to them and the influence of dynamic phenomena caused by an artificial vibration source is growing. Such objects also include historical buildings. In the regions of all project partners, there are a large number of heritage buildings that are affected by this process. The result is the occurrence of building failures and subsequently increasing investments for their reconstruction and protection. The vibrations also cause permanent deformation of the ground, which is the reason for the deflection of the structure. This deflection can be corrected (rectification). Urban development often requires the displacement of buildings in vertical and horizontal directions. Research is being carried out on this subject, and the results are being implemented. There are, therefore, new opportunities to enable this process, and the project is intended to inform such research and opportunities.

added value of the project

The project follows the cooperation of four universities in the field of experimental dynamics of civil engineering structures. Each of the four participating countries has its own criteria for assessing the vulnerability of historic buildings to induced seismicity. The innovative intention will be to exchange experiences, compare procedures and evaluations in order to improve the whole process of this type of dynamic loading of structures. At present, the educational process only marginally covers the investigated problem.
